David Chase has made a five-year first-look deal with WarnerMedia. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that The Sopranos creator has agreed to create new content for HBO, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys said that “David Chase is one of the most gifted storytellers working in the film and television industry… and this deal affords us a wonderful opportunity to continue this relationship at HBO and HBO Max.”

Coming fresh off the release of The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel film to The Sopranos, the question on everyone’s mind is whether or not Chase plans on producing more content related to the acclaimed series and its prequel. Chase told Deadline in September that under certain circumstances, he may be open to making a sequel to Many Saints. However, he also made clear that he was “much more interested in doing other things. Much more.”

The Sopranos, which is widely considered one of the greatest shows of all time, followed the life of a mobster and a family man, Tony Soprano, portrayed by the late James Gandolfini. Having been on the air for eight years, fans were coming up with theories for years about how the series would end. Those theories only continued after the show’s controversial finale. In that episode, we saw Tony in a diner with his family, as his daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) walked in. Tony looked up, the screen faded to black, and the credits rolled on the series.

While this ending left many viewers enraged, many were hopeful that it was setting audiences for The Sopranos getting the big-screen treatment in a sequel film. However, that hope seemed dashed in 2013 when Gandolfini died of a heart attack. The prequel film, starring Gandolfini’s son Michael Gandolfini as a teenage Tony Soprano, tells the character’s origin story and how he was shaped by mobster Dickie Moltisanti.

Every episode of The Sopranos can be viewed on HBO Max, and The Many Saints of Newark will be streaming on the platform until October 31.
