The long wait is finally over: Darkest Dungeon 2 releases today. If you’re on the west coast of the US, you’ll be able to get it at 9 AM your time, while those on the east will have to wait until noon their time, and our friends in the UK and surrounding areas will get it at 5 PM their time. You can head over to the Epic Games Store when it becomes available to you. If you haven’t been keeping up on the Darkest Dungeon 2 news, let’s take a look at what’s been making everyone so excited for its release.

Darkest Dungeon 2 Release

Darkest Dungeon 2 is, unsurprisingly, the sequel to 2016’s Darkest Dungeon. The original was a side-scrolling party-based RPG with several roguelike features and was tough as nails. Darkest Dungeon was praised not only for its aesthetic but also several interesting gameplay features, including the need to fight not only monsters but your own stresses and insecurities. You also had the choice of 16 playable heroes, which gave players a lot of variety when it came to making their parties. Also, the Plague Doctor just looks cool.

Developer Red Hook continues the fun in Darkest Dungeon 2, which will inherit the same roguelike features of its predecessor. In true roguelike fashion, each journey you make will be short and almost certainly end poorly, but will also allow you to unlock abilities, as well as new characters, like The Runaway.

New Features

Adding some fresh blood to the team could very well be a good thing because spending all that time together is bound to result in some grated nerves. Thankfully you’ll have the chance to rest at inns to have some fun and repair some of those bonds. It’s like you’re a real family! A family of the damned, perhaps, but a family nonetheless.

Red Hook has also promised several features that will be of interest to fans of the series:

  • Uncover and experience the tragic origin stories of the heroes.
  • A stylish and dynamic evolution of Darkest Dungeon’s signature art style.
  • A return of the narration system and voice actor Wayne June!
  • Exciting improvements to the turn-based combat from Darkest Dungeon.
