It looks like Sony has plans to expand their Spider-Man Universe following the billion-dollar success of Spider-Man No Way Home. Deadline reports that Dakota Johnson, best known for her starring role in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, is in talks to star in Sony’s Madame Web movie, the first female hero in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The untitled Madame Web film will be directed by S.J. Clarkson, who is no stranger to the Marvel universe thanks to her previous work on Netflix’s Jessica Jones. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will tag-team the screenplay; the two have previously collaborated on Power Rangers, Gods Of Egypt, and the upcoming SSU title Morbius. If Dakota Johnson is cast, Madame Web will be her first role as a comic book hero.
Get To Know Madame Web
Madame Web, aka Cassandra Webb, is a mutant Marvel hero from Salem, Oregon, for those who aren’t familiar with the character. Madame Web suffers from a neurological disease called myasthenia gravis, which renders her paralyzed and blind. She usually appears in a wheelchair created by her husband Jonathan Webb, which doubles as a life support vessel in the comics. Madame Web is the grandmother of Charlotte Witter, a famous fashion designer who later becomes the fourth Spider-Woman. Web made her Marvel debut in The Amazing Spider-Man issue # 210 and usually appears in a supporting role in the Spider-Man series, assisting our web-slinging hero with her psychic abilities, which include contacting the spirits of the dead.
Since her introduction in August 1980, Madame Web has made several dozen appearances collectively throughout Deadpool, Marvel Knights, Spider-Woman, Sensational, and Amazing Spider-Man comics. Web encounters several Marvel heroes, including Jessica Jones, and assists them with her psychic powers, including telepathy, telekinesis, and clairvoyance. Madame Web will join Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius in the SSU. I’m curious to see what other Marvel characters make into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
