It is official, D&D Beyond is getting a mobile app. The popular tabletop RPG has a long history with complicated world-building and character creation, leaving players with binders and complicated records. D&D Beyond was meant to be an online solution to this problem. The platform is fairly popular and it’s been around for a while. Now, however, D&D is finally made the jump to offline digital record-keeping.
Show me D&D games being moved purely digital events due to quarantine, it is nice to have an alternative that can be used anywhere. It is quite nice to have the option of offline usage for whenever things go back to normal and games can be held in person.
It is also great to be able to update character information and keep notes on the go. This new direction for Wizards of the Coast is certainly welcome. It also presents the opportunity for D&D to expand its branding and customer outreach.
That is not to say that there are no problems with the app or D&D Beyond itself. D&D Beyond has two versions, free and premium. The free site isn’t bad, but for custom world-building and character creation, the premium is the only option. Unfortunately, the premium version can be pretty pricey.
It will be interesting to see how D&D addresses this problem, especially given the fact that there are already several free apps available for character creation and world-building. Wizards of the Coast has by no means cornered the market for D&D apps, which makes the app’s future development worth watching. This app opens up new markets for D&D and gives players a careful decision to consider.
With D&D’s massive world-building, which spans multiple worlds, planes, and lore sets, the only real question here is why didn’t they create an app sooner?
