Square Enix have revealed that French games studio Sushee will be remaking the original Fear Effect for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Fear Effect Reinvented will be a full remake of the PlayStation original with improved graphics and controls for a more modern and smoother experience. Handled by Sushee who are currently working on the real-time tactics game Fear Effect Sedna, Reinvented aims to stay true to its source material while bringing the game into the hands of modern gamers.

Judging by the trailer, Reinvented still retains the original’s spooky cyberpunk aesthetic, complete with mild cell-shading on its character models. If the finished game features visuals similar to the trailer, we could have a remake worthy of taking on Resident Evil REmake on our hands.

“Fear Effect Reinvented will capture the same spirit and atmosphere as the original game, but it’ll bring it into the present with drastically improved visuals, tweaked controls and other exciting extras,” said Sushee founder Benjamin Anseaumee to Destructoid.

The original Fear Effect was an intriguing game that has kept a very potent cult following since its launch in the year 2000. While well received critically, many critics also made note of its insanely long load times, janky controls and unbalanced gameplay. Sushee seems well aware of these issues–after all, they are huge fans of the series–and hope to remedy them in their upcoming remake.
