One of the most controversial topics lately is how Cyberpunk 2077 depicts transgender characters, as you might’ve heard recently. Anyway, CD Projekt RED is focusing on that and wants players to have the freedom to create a character who could be transgender or gender fluid at all since day one.

The discussion’s been all around the way a poster shown in a recent Nvidia screenshot was sexualizing and poorly depicting the topic of transgender characters in video games, which was explained as part of a bad cyberpunk society acting like it doesn’t really care about that, and just wants to do money exploiting the bodies of people around.

“It’s a very sensitive and important subject, I believe. We have put a lot of thought into this. One of the things we want to do in the final game (which we couldn’t show in the demo yet, because as you mentioned it’s a work in progress) is to give the players as many options of customization at the beginning of the game as we can,” said, indeed, quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz.

“For example, we want to do this thing where, as you create your character after you choose the body type, you can, for example, use physical traits as you build your face that could be assigned to a man or a woman.”

CEO Marcin Iwinski added that the editor we’ve watched so far is not “final,” as “there will be full fluidity and on top of that you’ll be able to choose the male or female voice. Whatever you please.” This is an option I think players will appreciate, especially after all that criticism.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on April 16, 2020.
