The popular, and extremely deep, grand strategy game, Crusader Kings 2 by Paradox Interactive has had its upcoming expansion, Charlemagne, announced.
The expansion will bring with it a whole load of new content including a whole new century to play in and story events that coincide with Charlemagne’s rein. This expansion, however, isn’t just the game developers jumping into their mod tools and redrawing borders on the game map to look like what you would expect during the 8th century and calling it an expansion (although, they absolutely did do that, with great amounts of research to keep authenticity).
The Charlemagne expansion will bring a host of gameplay changes, some of which will be available to players without the expansion (but requiring some prerequisite DLCs). These changes include a different way to assassinate characters. Crusader Kings 2 has had the “assassinate” button removed in favor of the more complex assassination plot system.
You will now also be able to create new “kingdoms” (which may, perhaps, grow into empires) from any sort of dukedom or principality that you find yourself in, giving you, the player, much more freedom and ability to shape history the way you want it to be shaped. And along with the ability to shape history, they have also included the “chronicle” which aptly chronicles the story of your progress as the game ticks by the years so that you can read up on all the family intrigue that has occurred in your dynasty throughout your sessions.
Other changes include more gameplay for the early-game like the “tribal holding system” which will supplant the castle, city system. Additional religions and cultures will be available as well which will add to the complexity of the game making the Charlemagne expansion one of the more substantive updates in Crusader Kings 2 history.
The Crusader Kings 2 Charlemagne Expansion will be available for download on the 14th of October for Windows, Mac and Linux PCs at a price of $14.99.
