Not even Terry Crews could save this game from bombing.
Crackdown 3 has certainly been one of the longest gestating games of this generation of consoles after initially being revealed as a way to really push the idea of cloud computing on the Xbox One and what it could do. After a number of years and what seemed like multiple overhauls, the game finally released last month to disappointing reviews all around. We saw games like Anthem and Jump Force overcome negative reviews to sell well for the month of February, but Crackdown 3 was not so lucky in its debut month.
As reported by VentureBeat as always, the February NPD numbers were just released yesterday and it was no surprise to see some of the games at the top. While we didn’t expect Crackdown 3 to win the month, it certainly did worse than we could have ever expected.
When looking at the top 20 for the month of February, Crackdown 3 is nowhere to be seen whatsoever. Your first thought might be that any Xbox game would fail to chart well due to being part of Xbox Game Pass, but that has not been the case in the past. Games like Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 topped the NPD charts in their respective months last year even with Game Pass, so the correlation there does not seem to match up.
This is truly a major disappointment for Xbox after the success they had in 2018 behind the aforementioned games and also Forza Horizon 4, but the hype around Crackdown 3 has been minimal for awhile due to how long it has taken. The reviews for the game certainly didn’t help boost sales in anyway either, with Twitch numbers also being almost non-existent right after launch.
Hopefully this isn’t the end of the Crackdown series though, as the first two games offered lots of fun. Crackdown 3 just felt like it was always going to disappoint with the long wait and changes made over time. If Terry Crews can’t save a game for you, there likely isn’t anybody that could.
