Corsair K95 RGB Platinum XT Keyboard

Recently, we looked at one of the latest products from Corsair, the DARK CORE RGB PRO Gaming Mouse.  Now, we are going to look at one of their other products, the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum XT Keyboard.

Earlier this year, Corsair released this keyboard as an upgrade to an already popular Corsair K95 RGB Platinum to add a few more features.

Features:

Wrist Wrest:

One of the upgrades that come with the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum XT is the detachable wrist wrest.  The original Platinum came with a less-than-desirable wrist wrest and wasn’t the best feature of the keyboard.

  • K95 RGB PLATINUM XT Mechanical Gaming Keyboard
  • Detachable cushioned leatherette palm rest
  • FPS and MOBA keycap sets with a keycap puller
  • S-key keycap set
  • CORSAIR logo keycap
  • Quick start guide
  • Warranty card

The new XT version has a wrist wrest that is covered by leatherette that is more permeable. Also, it is padded and plush for more comfort providing nice support.

Switches:

With the original Platinum, you were given the choice of Cherry MX Speed and Cherry MX Brown switches, but with the XT, you now have the option of Cherry MX Blue switches.

The Cherry MX Blue Switches are a little more “clicky” if you like to hear the click of the keyboard.  If you are using this in an office, you might go with the Cherry MX Speed or Cherry MX Brown switches as they are quieter.

Keycaps:

One of the differences between the original Platinum and the Platinum XT is the keycaps.  The XT comes with doubleshot keycaps which are made with PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), a thicker, more durable option.

Another feature is the FPS and MOBA keycap sets that come with the keyboard and they even provide you with a keycap puller.

Macros:

There are six Macro keys that have been added to the left end of the keyboard.  These are programmable for gaming but that’s not all.  Corsair gets better all the time and integrating the functions of their products to work together.

For instance, these Macro keys can be used for streaming functions while communicating with the Elgato Stream Deck.

Streaming:

As previously mentioned, this keyboard has six macro keys and these keys can be used to program the keys for streaming and communicate with the Elgato Stream Deck.  You can change out the keycaps to the G-keys or the S-keys (for streaming).

When using the keyboard for streaming, one thing to note is the fact that the Stream Deck software and the iCUE software must both be running.  Also, the functions related to live streaming must be set up in the Stream Deck software, not iCUE.

iCUE Software:

The iCUE software provides options to make the keys on this keyboard programmable.  Additionally, you are able to backlight each individual key.

The software allows you to save as many profiles as you would like and the keyboard provides onboard memory for up to five profiles.

The iCUE software can be used to customize the RGB lighting, set up the macro programming, map keys, as well as synchronize other compatible CORSAIR products.

Backlighting:

The XT version of this keyboard provides per-key RGB backlighting and a 19-zone LightEdge across the top of the keyboard that brings vibrant lighting with a ton of customization options.

The options seem limitless.

Verdict:

The Corsair K95 RGB Platinum XT Keyboard is a great keyboard for gamers or streamers.  The updates to the original Platinum do not make up a huge difference and you might not want to replace it with the XT but, if you don’t have the original and are looking for an amazing keyboard, this would be a great pick.

The keycaps are more durable, there are more customizable key options and it is compatible with the iCUE software and Elgato Stream Deck. Overall, this is an improvement to a product that was already very popular. The only downfall might be the price.
