If E3 showed us anything, it was that cloud based gaming is just around the corner. Companies like Gaikai and OnLine are primed and ready to deliver digital titles to consumers, as a supplement to their disc-based offerings on next-gen consoles like the PS4. Both Microsoft and Sony have reaffirmed their commitment to delivering traditional titles to consumers, but Sony believes that this move towards the cloud is “absolutely inevitable“.

Speaking in a recent interview with MCV, Shuhei Yoshida, the head of Sony’s Worldwide Studios explained that they are watching companies like OnLive very closely for ways to integrate the technology into the PlayStation brand.

“We’re looking at what OnLive is doing, and the tech around that, and considering how this can be a part of PlayStation,” Yoshida told the publication. “When there are faster internet connections, gaming in the cloud as a subscription service could become a reality.”

Prior to E3, rumor had it that Sony was set to announced a deal with Gaikai to deliver backwards compatibility through the cloud. E3 came and went, with no announcement from Sony or Gaikai, but that’s not to say that something isn’t in the works for when the PlayStation 4 finally arrives.
