It’s a big year for the Dungeons and Dragons city of Baldur’s Gate. First, Wizards of the Coast announced a new core 5th Edition book around it. Now, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first game in the franchise, Skybound Games and Beamdog are releasing enhanced versions of the Baldur’s Gate series and many more classic D&D games on consoles.
Baldur’s Gate, the Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear expansion, Baldur’s Gate II, Planescape: Torment/Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights are coming to consoles. These games will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch this Fall.
Starting in September, The Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition, and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition will hit shelves and be available to download digitally. The games will release in North America on September 24th (and September 27th in the UK).
Two months later, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition will follow suit with physical and digital copies. It will be available in North America on December 3rd (and December 6th in the UK).
As for what enhancing the games means, Beamdog says the upgrades include native support for high-resolution widescreen displays, controls optimized for console controllers, new content to explore, new characters/classes, new voiceovers, expanded character creation options, improved multiplayer, redesigned UI, and fixes to bugs.
The developers released a short trailer of all the games as well.
The Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition Pack will include the original game and its sequel, Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. The games will feature all of the DLC and the expansion game Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear. There will also be new original content developed by Beamdog that will bridge the games together.
Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition are combined together in one box and will also feature all of their DLC.
Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, which released originally in 2002, will include 10 standalone Dungeons and Dragons adventures plus co-op and online multiplayer.
All of these games will be available for $49.99 each and preorders are open now.
Whether any of the new content will focus on content featured in the new book, Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus is unknown. We’ll have to wait to see if any more information is announced before September.
