Christina Ricci is set to appear in Tim Burton’s Wednesday series, a spin-off of The Addams Family coming to Netflix. Ricci, who as a child portrayed Wednesday in The Addams Family (1991) and The Addams Family Values (1993), will play a mystery role that has yet to be disclosed. Deadline reports that the nature of Ricci’s role is being hidden for the sake of surprising viewers, but it has been confirmed that Ricci is not playing an older version of the titular character. She will apparently be portraying a character similar to Wednesday’s dorm mother at Nevermore Academy, who was being played by actress Thora Birch who had to leave the series due to an illness in the family. Ricci is not serving as a recast for that role but is playing a brand new character.
Wednesday Series: Wednesday’s School Days
Ricci’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams is one of her most famous roles and one of the most memorable portrayals of the character. In this new series, Wednesday is being portrayed by 19-year-old Jenna Ortega from You and Jane the Virgin. The series will detail Wednesday’s high school years at Nevermore Academy as she tries to control her developing psychic abilities, stop a killing spree, and solve a supernatural mystery that affected her family 25 years ago. She’ll have to do all of that while being a teenage high-schooler dealing with new relationships.
Along with Ortega and Ricci, Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones will star as Wednesday’s parents Gomez and Morticia Addams, respectfully. Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones fame will star as Nevermore principal Larissa Weems where Christina Ricci’s character will play in remains a mystery.
A release date has not been set for the Wednesday series, but it is expected to release on Netflix in 2022.
