Christina Elmore has announced today that she will be the latest cast addition to The Girls on the Bus, a semi-historical political drama series coming to HBO Max. Elmore joins previously-announced cast members Melissa Benoist, known for her role in DCTV’s Supergirl, and Natasha Behnam, who starred in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on the CW.

The Girls on the Bus, which was initially created as part of a deal between Melissa Benoist and Warner Bros. Television, will star Benoist as Sadie McCarthy, a journalist obsessed with Tim Crouse’s 1973 book The Boys on the Bus, which is a real-life, semi-nonfiction look at the life of a journalist on the road following a political candidate. According to Kirkus Reviews, Crouse’s aim was to “cover the boys who cover the candidates, letting us in on how the national press makes its copy, regards its members, wields its influence, reacts to the Nixon-McGovern hustle.”

Sadie McCarthy has reportedly followed in the footsteps of The Boys on the Bus and scrapped her entire life to hit the campaign trail and report every juicy detail – along the way, she meets a small group of competitors in the form of Natasha Behnam as Lola Gabriel and Christina Elmore as Kimberlyn Kendrick, who Deadline describes as “an Ivy League-educated Reagan Republican and campaign reporter for Liberty News.”

The role of a fourth woman, Grace, has not been cast yet, but the HBO Max series will follow the ragtag group of reporters as they bond with each other and follow a batch of political candidates, eventually uncovering a scandal that “could take down not just the presidency but our entire democracy along the way,” according to the official show synopsis.

Behind the Making of “The Girls on the Bus”

The Girls on the Bus was initially announced two weeks ago, with the show being born out of a renewed deal between Melissa Benoist’s Three Things Productions and Warner Bros. Television following Benoist’s exit of Supergirl on the CW. The Girls on the Bus starring Elmore, Benoist, and Behnam, was reportedly inspired by a chapter of show writer and executive producer Amy Chozick’s book Chasing Hillary, and Benoist had reportedly been in discussion about the show since February of this year.

The Girls on the Bus on HBO Max will be executive produced by Benoist and Chozick alongside Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries), Rina Mimoun (Privileged), Greg Berlanti (Legends of Tomorrow), and Sarah Schechter (Unpregnant). Further information on the series, including further cast information and an expected release date, is currently unknown.
