It has been some time since Mad Max: Fury Road reignited the franchise to its former glory as George Miller brought Tom Hardy into the role with Charlize Theron by his side. Now, Theron’s character is getting a Mad Max standalone prequel simply titled, Furiosa, which will see Chris Hemsworth take a dive into the chaotic world with Anya Taylor-Joy taking on the titled character. In an interview, the Thor actor was so terrified that he would “derail” the franchise.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Chris Hemsworth talked about Furiosa and his feelings going in. The film was shot in Australia this year and wrapped in October. The actor got the script two years ago, so he had plenty of time to mull it over as he thought about his character. In that lead-up, he got into his own head about the project.

Chris Hemsworth on joining Mad Max prequel Furiosa

What most people know the actor for is his charming god, Thor, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has shown emotional depth with comedic chops that have made him a fan favorite as he has gone on to battle gods, aliens, and Hulk. We will be getting a different side of him in Furiosa as Chris Hemsworth turns on the switch to play the bad guy as Dr. Dementus, who he jokingly called “a pleasant fellow.”

In another universe, we could have gotten him as the noble character of the franchise. He had tried to go for it, but Tom Hardy already took the role. Now, we get him in the world as a villain. He will star with Taylor-Joy, Tom Burke (Mank), Angus Sampson (Fargo), and Nathan Jones (Fury Road). Miller is back in the director’s chair and writer’s room with Nick Lathouris (Fury Road). It will hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
