The launch trailer for The Outer Worlds recently dropped. And, oh boy, what a trailer it is! Brief it may be, but it details everything we need to see before the imminent release. We see locations, characters, a tone is established and the wacky charm is in the foreground. However, the dialogue also tells us how much of a focus there is on player choice. Also, there are a variety of classes on display. Player agency is definitely the key phrase here.
And, now, with only five days until launch, let’s take a look at The Outer Worlds so we can be prepared for its landing on October 25!
Who’s Making the game?
This is an important part of the discussion. Who is developing The Outer Worlds? That’d be the folks, and RPG Gods, over at Obsidian Entertainment. The studio is responsible for many acclaimed RPGs of the past fifteen years. Think Pillars of Eternity, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas. That last game is key here, with many gamers and members of the press dubbing The Outer Worlds as the Fallout game we’ve been waiting for. Fitting as many of the team at Obsidian are, indeed, former devs of the franchise back when Interplay Entertainment made them. So, with a resume like this, there is a good reason to be very excited about this game.
What’s The Outer Worlds About?
In a synopsis on the game’s official website, we are told:
As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter a host of factions all vying for power, who you decide to become will determine the fate of everyone in Halcyon. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.”
Now that describes the perfect hybrid between a player-driven RPG and a kick-ass, pulpy action fest. Our hopes are high for this one, but we’ll just have to wait until next Friday to see what The Outer Worlds is like.
The Outer Worlds launches October 25 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
