Oscar wins, and success made Mad Max: Fury Road a standout in 2015, but as noted by Charlize Theron and others, it was a brutal production. Reports and a book by New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan have been made about the trouble of shooting from the environment of Namibia to leading star Tom Hardy being late to set. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron reflected on the “f—ing tough” film, which she did not “appreciate” until she saw the completed film.

Some people like to be given a challenge, and Charlize Theron is up for that, but Mad Max: Fury Road pushed it too far. She said she had never shot a film that required that “kind of endurance” and is uncertain if she would do it again. Despite this, she does think it brought “magic” to the film, with the note that nobody should “need trauma or sacrifice.”

Charlize Theron did not “appreciate” Mad Max: Fury Road during production

It is hard to imagine what you are doing on the inside until you can step back to see the completed work. That was how Charlize Theron felt when shooting the 2015 Mad Max movie. When she watched the film, she thought, “Oh my god, this is what was in his head [director George Miller] the whole time and I couldn’t hear it.” Now with that perspective, she wants to do more to “get a little bit more of what he tried to do in the first one.”

By having a multi-picture deal, we could see her reprise her role as Furiosa. For now, Anya Taylor-Joy is taking on the role for the prequel. The star of the character’s 2015 debut called the young star “one of the greatest f—ing actresses” and gave her full support for the Queen’s Gambit star taking on the role. She did give her hope that the prequel’s production was not as challenging as what she had experienced. Although, to Taylor-Joy, it was quite the wild ride, unlike anything she had done before.

Furiosa will hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
