After years of sitting on the shelf, the solo movie Gambit was finally laid to rest. Channing Tatum was to portray the Ragin’ Cajun in an X-Men spinoff film. However, Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox has dashed any hopes of seeing Tatum dealing out justice. Now, the former G.I. Joe is ready to adapt another comic book character: The Maxx.

The Maxx Project: What We Know

Channing Tatum’s Free Association company will work with Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment to bring The Maxx to life. As of this writing, Tatum is only a producer and does not have an acting role. Moreover, it is unclear whether or not this will be a live-action or animated adaptation. Furthermore, there is no information about The Maxx being a movie or series. Free Association and Vertigo Entertainment are reportedly meeting with various parties to discuss the project’s direction.

The Maxx was a comic book series by Sam Kieth and published by Image Comics. Beginning its run in 1993, the comic told the story of a homeless man who exists in two realities. One reality is the real world, where he lives in a box. The other is a dream world, the Outback, where he is a hero who protects the Jungle Queen. The queen’s real-world analog is a social worker named Julie who is unaware of her connections to the Outback and The Maxx. The series was darker than more mainstream comics and lasted 35 issues before ending in 1998.
