Chainsaw Man And More Rank On The New York Times Best Sellers List

The 22nd volume Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen has ranked #6 on The New York Times’ monthly Graphic Books and Manga bestseller list, along with the fifth volume of Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia manga and Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga (ranking at #2 and #5 respectively).

The increase in the first half of 2021 was led by the adult fiction category and Viz Media. My Hero Academia was one of the largest titles in the first half of the year, selling more than 90,000 physical copies. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba has also sold more than 82,000 copies in the first half of the year.

The New York Times posted its first new Graphic Books and manga bestsellers list in October of 2019. After its initial release, it became a permanent fixture in the newspaper’s rankings.

Chainsaw Man has also been a blockbuster in Japan. The dark-themed manga series has had a confirmed 11 million copies in circulation as of June 2021. Because of its popularity, an anime series has also been announced for the manga.

Past rankings for The New York Times have also included the 33rd volume of Isayama’s Attack on Titan, which at #5 in June. My Hero Academia has also been a longstanding title on the list, with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba making its first title entry at #15 in June. YA fiction sales have the largest gain among all the major categories in the first half of 2021. As of now, units are up 48.8% for YA manga.

Jujutsu Kaisen has also announced a new film set to premiere in December of 2021. The film was originally revealed immediately after the finale of Season 1. However, Jujutsu Kaisen’s author has announced an indefinite hiatus for the popular series due to Akutami’s health concerns. Season 2 of the anime does not have a confirmed release date.

Currently, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, and Attack on Titan are available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Chainsaw Man’s anime does not have a confirmed release date as well.
