Celeste, a beloved indie platformer from 2018, will be receiving free DLC in an upcoming update. The new chapter will be titled Celeste: Farewell and will serve as the ninth and final chapter in the game. The news comes via the developer’s website. In addition to new levels, the update will also bring new music and new gameplay mechanics.
Celeste follows Madeline, a young girl struggling with depression who climbs the titular mountain as a metaphorical way to overcome her issues. She meets several eccentric characters along her journey, including a ghostly hotel owner who can’t let go of the past and a literal manifestation of her own negative energy. The game was praised for the way it handled the difficult topic of mental illness. But the amazing gameplay and beautiful score by Lena Raine propelled it to “must play” status.
While Celeste did have an ending, the conclusion still left Madeline on the mountain. This new chapter promises a send-off for the characters and that world, and one that will undoubtedly be emotional. But that’s not the only news this post gave us.
Matt Makes Games developed Celeste. Founder Matt Thorson developed one title beforehand, 2013’s Towerfall. But this post reveals he is retiring that moniker. As he’s been able to add members over the past few years, he feels it doesn’t make much sense. Therefore, the group’s new name will be Extremely OK Games or EXOK for short. The success of Celeste and Towerfall has allowed him to add new team members, as well as purchase office space and begin work on a new game. It’s codenamed EXOK1, but it’s very early on in development.
Celeste: Farewell will release on September 9th. However, the Xbox One version may be a bit late due to the size of the patch and how small their team is.
