The Herbalist is an NPC in A Plague Tale: Requiem who interacts with Amicia and Hugo during their journey but meets his unfortunate demise in Chapter 3: A Burden of Blood. Many players likely felt mournful at the sight of his death and hoped to save him before his tragic fate unfolded. After all, the world of A Plague Tale is far from merciful and full of hostile beings who only wish harm on Amicia and Hugo. Anyone friendly enough to aid the protagonists on their adventure deserves some compensation for their efforts, such as helping them survive their seemingly inevitable death.
Saving the Herbalist in A Plague Tale: Requiem
To save the Herbalist in A Plague Tale: Requiem, players must take several preparatory steps before the man’s life ends at the hands of his captors. To perform this feat, players must ensure they have enough crafted items to light and extinguish the fires around the area where the Herbalist appears with the two guards.
A Plague Tale: Requiem – All Old Protector’s Items in the Sanctuary
Based on gameplay footage provided by YouTuber Gamerpillar, players must begin their rescue by entering the church in the ruined village and looting the large chest for crafting materials. The chest can be found in the alcove to the right of the statue of Mary. Using the items found, craft several Extinguis with the Sling. Next, exit the church and put out the distant fire to the right, in front of the nearby building. Light the torch directly in front of the church’s entrance to provide Amicia with a pathway to the bushes near the trail where the Herbalist will emerge.
Stay hidden until the two guards get in range. As soon as the one on the left wanders over to the side of the road, use an Extinguis with the Sling to put out his torch, causing the rats to eat him alive. Be sure to hide immediately after launching the projectile. This event will cause the other guard to investigate his partner’s corpse, leaving the Herbalist behind. Execute the same Extinguis throw to have the second guard killed. The rats should now all be occupied with the guards’ bodies, and the Herbalist’s life will now be saved in A Plague Tale: Requiem.
