When a new fortune-seeking player enters the Sea of Thieves, they first must select their gruff, swashbuckling appearance. Instead of individually creating a character, these new pirates will be given an essentially endless selection of randomly generated character models. Some players may choose whichever avatar first catches their eye, while others may take a bit longer cycling through the Infinite Pirate Generator. However, what happens if you later regret your choice of appearance? Perhaps later in the future, you wish to roleplay as a different-looking buccaneer, which begs the question, can you change your character in Sea of Thieves?

Can You Change Your Character in Sea of Thieves?

In short, the answer to “Can you change your character in Sea of Thieves” is a “yes.” However, the process of changing your character may not appeal to everyone. You’ll need to head over to the Sea of Thieves in-game store known as the Pirate Emporium. This shop features a plethora of skins and cosmetics to spice up the looks of your pirate or ship. You can even buy adorable pets like parrots, dogs, or monkeys to accompany you on your voyages. But to change your character, you must find and purchase an item called the Pirate Appearance Potion. The elixir allows players to have another chance at choosing a new appearance for their pirate in the Infinite Pirate Generator. It costs 149 Ancient Coins, which amounts to roughly a little over $2.

The bad news is, you can only purchase Ancient Coins in bundles, not exact amounts. The bundles to fulfill the cost of the Pirate Appearance Potion would either two “Secret Stash of the Ancients (100 Ancient Coins – $1.49)” or one “Lost Chest of the Ancients (500 Ancient Coins – $5.49).” This system of changing your character may upset some players. However, bear in mind that Sea of Thieves is a live service multiplayer game. Most games in this category usually charge players to change their appearances — some more than others. Unfortunately, even after purchasing a Pirate Appearance Potion, there is no way to manually customize your pirate. The Infinite Pirate Generator remains as players’ only available option.

If you insist on changing your character in Sea of Thieves for free, the only other alternative would be to reset your pirate by deleting the character from the Settings menu. As a result, all of your progress will also be reset, meaning you would lose reputation levels, in-game currencies, commendations, titles, and even cosmetics. So the Pirate Appearance Potion is basically your best bet to find the perfect pirate for you. It may take a few minutes to a couple of hours of cycling through the generator, but hopefully, you’ll find a character that suits you.
