Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is finally here. Launching to mostly critical acclaim, there is a group of users that has a big problem with the campaign.
That campaign involves US forces going up against a group of terrorist organizations. Some terrorists are based in fictitious Middle Eastern country.
Others are Russian forces. The inclusion of Russia in the Modern Warfare story has riled up a segment of the Internet.
It appears Russian nationals are quite angry and are making their voices heard. Over on Metacritic, the newest Call of Duty is sporting three critic reviews as of Sunday.
It got scores of 90, 80 and 80. Over the same time period, user reviews have Modern Warfare pegged as a terrible game with an average of 2.9.
A closer look at all the zero scores tells the tale of a group of people, all with roughly the same complaints.
A user named Panzersheyn posted. Others had similar complaints.
Complaints about “spitting in the face of the Russian people” litter the website. Those reviews all have scores of zeros.
Review bombs have been a thing since websites started allowing users to voice their opinions. The upside of this review bomb is it becomes rather obvious why the zeroes are being posted.
However, that doesn’t solve the problem at large. People going to look and see how average users enjoy the game won’t find any help from Metacritic.
It can be hard to tell the honest criticism of the game, with people mad about a story point. For their part, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare devs say the game is about bonds of friendship and isn’t focused on any “big bad.”
