It’s not a Treyarch Call of Duty title without Zombies. This time around, with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Treyarch is trying to open up a “new chapter with a new narrative” for the whole Zombies saga. Cold War Zombies will also include new ways to progress, the return of fan-favorite features like Perks, and for the first time ever, just like the multiplayer since the Modern Warfare remake, you can team up with friends across all platforms with cross-play. Watch the trailer for the remade mode below.
The story of Cold War Zombies will start on the Die Maschine map. Its German name won’t just be a simple nod to the classic Nacht der Untoten though. Die Maschine takes place in the early ’80s, but it is a World War II bunker that’s being unearthed by Requiem, a CIA-backed international response team led by Grigori Weaver from the original Black Ops story.
You, as a part of Requiem, will have to investigate what lies beneath this rotting structure and fend off its rotting denizens. Should you succeed, Requiem may uncover a cache of decades-old secrets that upend the global order. At the same time, Requiem’s Soviet rival, the Omega Group, is also keeping tabs on paranormal activities like this. Between Requiem and Omega Group, there are plenty of characters who may aid or hinder your journey, while others have separate, unknown agendas that will be up to you to discover.
Aside from the fresh start on the story, Cold War Zombies is also revamping old mechanics and adding new additions inspired by the PvP multiplayer mode and Warzone. Here are some of them from the Call of Duty blog:
- Classic Zombies Perks are back with a Cold War aesthetic. Now there’s no limit to how many different Perks you can use at the same time.
- Playing Cold War Zombies will advance your Battle Pass and you can start the match with your very own Gunsmith-crafted loadout.
- All weapons now will have a rarity associated with them. And of course, higher rarity means greater damage and attachments.
- You can deploy Field Upgrades such as buffs, heals, or revives. Charge them up by killing zombies, then deploy them in crucial times.
- There are equipment items scattered around the map. Tactical equipment is similar to the equipment in multiplayer like Frag Grenades, while support equipment is high-powered offensive weaponry such as Grenade Launchers, Sentry Turrets, Explosive Bows, and even Chopper Gunners.
- And last but not least, the new Exfil system. Instead of waiting to die to the zombie horde, you can opt to exfiltrate via helicopter. Although one thing to remember, zombie spawns will crank up by a lot but you could gain some extra rewards… if you survive.
