Irish actor Brendan Gleeson has been officially announced as the latest addition to the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to 2019’s Joker. Widely known for his work in The Guard and Paddington 2, among other titles, Gleeson will be joining Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga for the new Joker film.

Information surrounding Joker: Folie à Deux – also known simply as Joker 2 – are somewhat hard to come by, but a few details regarding the film have been confirmed, including that the film will have musical elements and that it will take place inside of the infamous Arkham Asylum, where Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix), was sent after the events of Joker (2019). Variety has also confirmed that Joker: Folie à Deux will continue Joker’s tradition of being set “in their own independent universe” and lacking any connection to the wider DC Universe or DC films like Justice League or 2022’s The Batman.

Interestingly, Lady Gaga has been cast as Harley Quinn, taking over for Margot Robbie from Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). News of Gaga’s casting came in early August of this year with some new film promotional footage showing her dancing with Phoenix’s Joker.
